Gambier is one of Indonesia’s smallholder plantation products and also a key export commodity. This product is obtained through the pressing process of the leaves and twigs of the Uncaria gambier (Hunt) Roxb plant. Gambier extract contains polyphenolic compounds such as catechins and tannins, which have high economic value. These compounds are used as raw materials in various industries, including pharmaceuticals (such as toothpaste), cosmetics, leather tanning, dyeing, and the food industry.
Indonesia plays a vital role as the world’s leading producer of gambier, contributing approximately 80% of global demand. Its comparative advantages in climate and topography, which are favorable for gambier cultivation, have positively impacted the increase in production and exports each year, making Indonesia the main supplier in the international market.
Gambier production in Indonesia is concentrated in main provinces: West Sumatra, North Sumatra, and South Sumatra. Among these, West Sumatra is the largest producer, accounting for about 80% of total national production. Both the volume and value of gambier exports from West Sumatra showed an increasing trend. Therefore, the province is considered the national benchmark for gambier production.
Within West Sumatra Province, there are two main gambier-producing regions: Lima Puluh Kota Regency and Pesisir Selatan Regency. Among these, Lima Puluh Kota is the largest contributor, accounting for 69.75% of the total gambier production in West Sumatra.
